Declan Doogan

Chair of the Board of Trustees

USA

Declan Doogan chairs the Board of Trustees of the Bridge Institute, bringing to the Institute's work the discipline of a career spent developing medicines that reached hundreds of millions of people.

A physician by training (University of Glasgow, 1975, internal medicine and cardiology), Declan moved early into pharmaceutical research and spent 25 years at Pfizer, rising to Senior Vice President and Head of Worldwide Development, with posts in the United Kingdom, the United States and Japan. His teams were behind some of the most widely used medicines of their generation, including Zoloft, Norvasc, Diflucan, Zithromax, Cardura, Viagra and Lipitor.

After leaving Pfizer in 2007 he turned to biotechnology. As Chief Medical Officer and interim Chief Executive of Amarin he led the company's restart, which culminated in the FDA approval of Vascepa for elevated triglycerides. He co-founded Portage Biotech and Biohaven, chairing Biohaven's board, and is a co-founder of the longevity company Juvenescence. He sits on the boards of biotechnology companies in the UK and the US.

Declan is a Visiting Professor at the University of Glasgow Medical School, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine, and holds an honorary DSc from the University of Kent.
