The Carbon Dioxide Removal Breakthrough Mission

To catalyse a global agency that inspires Carbon Dioxide Removal across the world.

The Challenge

To achieve the Paris Agreement’s ambition — holding the global average temperature rise to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels — it will be necessary not only to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions but also to remove carbon dioxide from the air. Last year, annual CO₂ emissions reached an all-time high of more than 42 billion tonnes (GtCO₂). Global temperatures rise in direct proportion to the total carbon dioxide emitted — for this year and all years that follow. To halt that rise, we must enormously amplify the world’s capabilities in Carbon Dioxide Removal. The only IPCC scenario that delivers a temperature rise below 2°C beyond 2100 relies on significant removal of CO₂ from the atmosphere.

The Bridge Institute’s Role

The Bridge Institute has worked in partnership with government and institutional partners to explore and help shape the concept of a global agency dedicated to accelerating the solutions available to remove excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Our Approach

The Bridge Institute brought together leaders from world-leading carbon dioxide removal (CDR) companies, government, corporates, finance, and civil society — including young leaders — to determine how a global agency could catalyse a worldwide movement for carbon dioxide removal. Eight strategies were analysed with experts and key stakeholders:

  • Carbon Markets
  • Finance
  • Policy, Standards and Regulation
  • Direct Air Capture
  • Ocean Solutions
  • Nature-based Solutions
  • Enhanced Weathering and Mineralisation
  • Societal Engagement

Impact So Far

  • A detailed strategy is now complete, setting out the structure, mandate and pathway to deployment of the proposed global agency, built around five core pillars.
  • Over 300 stakeholders, including governments from across the world, have been engaged on the vision and urgency of Carbon Dioxide Removal.

What’s Next

Work continues to build momentum for Carbon Dioxide Removal and for the global coordination needed to accelerate it.
