Limiting the rise in global temperatures will require not only rapid reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, but also the large-scale removal of billions of tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. Recognising the urgency and complexity of this challenge, the Bridge Institute - in partnership with the British Embassy UAE - is exploring the creation of a Global Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) Centre of Excellence.
Last week, we convened leading scientists, policy makers, business leaders, academics and investors from the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom to co-shape a strategy for how nations can strengthen their commitments and capabilities to remove excess CO₂ from the atmosphere. This gathering marked a powerful moment of bilateral collaboration - one that signals a shared determination to accelerate global progress on carbon dioxide removal and climate resilience.
We are deeply grateful for the generous support of leaders across both governments, and to all the scientists, academics, investors and industry experts who contributed their insight and expertise. A special thanks goes to British Ambassador to the UAE, Edward Hobart CMG, and to our partners at the British Embassy - Mark B., Jessen Shah and Layla Bentley - for their commitment in bringing this initiative to life.
We also extend our appreciation to each participant who joined the workshop. The depth of engagement and the quality of ideas shared have already played a pivotal role in shaping the direction of this emerging Centre of Excellence. The energy, curiosity and ambition in the room made it clear: there is an extraordinary opportunity for nations to lead this work together.
Our thanks also go to Simon McKenzie (Mac), Tim Kruger, Michael Arthurs and Barney Hill, whose leadership and preparation were instrumental in delivering this significant event.
This workshop marks the beginning of a larger journey. In the coming weeks, we will share the roadmap, key outputs and next steps as we continue working with partners to bring this vision into reality.
